Motorcycle Winterization Guide

Thoroughly clean your motorcycle to remove dirt, grime, and road salts that can cause corrosion. Make sure to dry the motorcycle completely to prevent rust.

Change the engine oil and filter to remove contaminants that could damage the engine during storage. Fresh oil provides better protection for the internal engine components.

Fill the fuel tank to prevent rust and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from degrading and to protect the engine from gum and varnish buildup.

Start the motorcycle to circulate the stabilizer through the fuel system. Then, use a fogging oil in the cylinders to protect the internal surfaces against corrosion.

Remove the motorcycle's battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Ideally, keep it on a trickle charger to maintain its charge over the winter.

Check and inflate the tires to the recommended pressure to avoid flat spots from forming during long-term storage.

Lubricate the chain (for chain-driven bikes), control cables, and any moving parts to protect them from moisture and to ensure they remain flexible.

Cover the motorcycle with a breathable cover to keep dust off, while allowing moisture to escape. Don't use plastic covers as they can trap moisture.

Find a secure and dry place to store the motorcycle, away from any direct sunlight or extreme temperature changes. If possible, elevate the bike on a stand to take weight off the tires and suspension.

Consider performing a complete maintenance check before storage, including checking brake pads, fluids, and other routine items for wear and tear.
