Motorcycle Tire Maintenance

This playbook outlines the procedure for inspecting motorcycle tires for wear and tear, and provides a sequential process for their replacement when necessary.

Step 1: Inspection

Begin the maintenance by conducting a thorough inspection of both the front and rear tires for any signs of wear, damage, or punctures. Look for indicators such as tread wear, cracks, bulges, punctures, or any objects embedded in the tires.

Step 2: Tread Depth

Measure the tread depth using a tread depth gauge to ensure it is above the minimum legal limit. Pay special attention to wear indicators if present on the tire, which signal the need for replacement.

Step 3: Pressure Check

Check the tire pressure using a reliable tire pressure gauge. Ensure it matches the pressure recommended by the motorcycle manufacturer for optimal performance and safety.

Step 4: Decision

Decide if the tires require replacement based on the inspection. Criteria include tread depth being below the legal limit, the presence of irreparable damage, or visible signs of aging like dry rot.

Step 5: Remove Wheel

If tire replacement is needed, start by loosening the axle nuts and lifting the motorcycle using an appropriate stand so that the wheel is off the ground and can rotate freely for easy removal.

Step 6: Detach Tire

Carefully remove the wheel from the motorcycle. Deflate the tire completely by removing the valve core before proceeding to break the bead away from the rim using tire irons or a bead breaker.

Step 7: Remove Tire

Lever the tire off of the rim with tire irons, making sure not to damage the wheel or the tire if it's to be reused. Inspect the rim for any damage or debris before installing a new tire.

Step 8: Install New Tire

Mount the new tire onto the rim, making sure to align the valve stem and tire rotation marks correctly. Lubricate the bead and rim edge to make the tire easier to fit and reduce the risk of damage.

Step 9: Inflate Tire

Inflate the new tire to the recommended pressure. Check for any leaks around the valve stem and bead, and adjust as necessary. Once installed, refit the wheel to the motorcycle, making sure the axle nuts are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Step 10: Final Check

Conduct a final inspection to ensure the tire is properly seated on the rim and that wheel alignment is correct. Rotate the wheel manually to check for any imbalances or issues.

General Notes

Safety

Always consult the motorcycle's owner manual or a professional mechanic for the correct tire specifications and replacement procedures. Use proper tools and safety gear when performing tire maintenance and replacement.
