Window Draft Sealing
This guide provides a step-by-step approach to identify and seal drafty windows. The aim is to improve home insulation and energy efficiency by using simple sealing techniques.
Step 1: Identify Drafts
Check all windows in your home for drafts by using the hand test—feel for cool air near the edges. Alternatively, use a candle or incense stick to see if smoke moves, indicating airflow. Perform these tests on a windy day or when the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures is noticeable for the best results.
Step 2: Clean Surfaces
Clean all window frames and sashes thoroughly with soap and warm water. Remove any dust, dirt, and grime, as these can prevent sealing materials from adhering properly.
Step 3: Choose Sealant
Select a suitable sealant based on the type of window and the extent of the drafts. Options include weatherstripping, caulk for non-moving parts, and shrink film for a more temporary solution.
Step 4: Apply Weatherstripping
For movable parts of the window, like the sash, apply self-adhesive foam, rubber weatherstripping, or felt. Make sure the window can still open and close smoothly after application.
Step 5: Apply Caulk
Use silicone-based caulk to seal non-moving parts of the window, such as where the window frame meets the wall. Caulk both the interior and exterior, if accessible, to ensure a complete seal. Smooth out the caulk with a caulk tool or a damp finger for a clean finish.
Step 6: Install Shrink Film
If using shrink film, apply double-sided tape around the window frame, attach the film, and heat it with a hairdryer to 'shrink' it into place, providing an airtight seal.
Step 7: Inspect Seals
After the sealants have cured or set, inspect the work by repeating the draft test. Ensure there are no air leaks and the window operates as intended.
General Notes
Safety First
Ensure you use the ladder securely and safely if you need to seal high windows, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for any sealing products.
Caulk Season
The best time to apply caulk is during dry weather when the outdoor temperature is above 45°F (7°C) for at least three days.
Regular Checks
Do regular checks for drafts and reapply sealants as needed, especially before winter, to maintain energy efficiency.
