Fixing Squeaky Floors
This playbook provides a step-by-step guide to fix squeaky floors whether they are carpeted or hardwood. It covers methods for addressing the problem from both above and below the flooring.
Step 1: Identify Squeaks
Walk over the floor to locate the exact positions where squeaking occurs. Mark these spots with a piece of chalk or removable tape.
Step 2: Clear Area
Remove furniture and rugs from the squeaky area to have unobstructed access to the floor.
Step 3: For Hardwood
Proceed with the following steps if the floor is hardwood.
Step 4: Secure Boards
For accessible floors, from below, use wood screws to tighten the connection between the squeaky floorboards and the underlying joists.
Step 5: Fill Gaps
If there are gaps between the hardwood floorboards, use wood filler to fill them and reduce movement that could be causing squeaks.
Step 6: For Carpeted
Proceed with the following steps if the floor is carpeted.
Step 7: Locate Joists
Use a stud finder to locate the floor joists from above.
Step 8: Fix from Above
Using a special breakaway screw, affix the subfloor to the joist through the carpet.
Step 9: Remove Excess
Once the subfloor is secured to the joists, remove the upper part of the breakaway screws.
Step 10: Replace Carpet
Ensure the carpet is back in its original position, hiding any signs of the repair.
Step 11: Final Inspection
Walk over the repaired areas to ensure that there are no more squeaks. Replace the furniture and any other items removed.
