Installing Low-Flow Fixtures

This playbook outlines the steps to select and install low-flow water fixtures such as toilets, showerheads, and faucet aerators, to conserve water and energy.

Step 1: Selection

Research and choose low-flow fixtures that meet the efficiency criteria. Look for the EPA's WaterSense label for assurance of water and energy savings.

Step 2: Purchase

Buy the selected low-flow toilets, showerheads, and faucet aerators from a reputable supplier. Ensure compatibility with your existing plumbing.

Step 3: Remove Old Fixtures

Turn off the water supply. Carefully remove existing toilets, showerheads, and faucets, taking care to prevent damage to plumbing.

Step 4: Install Toilets

Following the manufacturer's instructions, install the low-flow toilets, ensuring a secure and leak-proof connection to the plumbing system.

Step 5: Install Showerheads

Wrap plumber's tape around the threads of the shower arm for a watertight seal. Screw on the new low-flow showerhead securely.

Step 6: Install Aerators

Unscrew the old aerator from the faucet, clean the threads, and screw the new low-flow aerator on tightly.

Step 7: Test Fixtures

Turn the water supply back on and test each fixture to ensure they are working correctly and not leaking.

Step 8: Adjustments

Make any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal performance and comfort, like adjusting toilet tank water levels or showerhead positions.

Properly dispose of or recycle old fixtures in accordance with local regulations.

Maintenance

Regularly clean and maintain your low-flow fixtures to prevent buildup that can reduce flow rates and efficiency over time.
