Laminate Flooring Installation

This playbook provides a step-by-step guide to installing laminate flooring. It is designed to assist home improvers with the process of enhancing their home's interior by laying new laminate floors.

Step 1: Preparation

Before beginning the installation, clear the room of furniture and remove any existing flooring or carpet. Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. If necessary, use underlayment to achieve a smooth base.

Step 2: Acclimate

Place the laminate planks in the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This allows the flooring to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity, preventing warping post-installation.

Step 3: Layout Plan

Plan the layout of your flooring. Decide the direction in which the planks will be laid. Measure the room to determine how many planks you will need and to plan for any necessary cuts.

Step 4: Cutting

Using a saw, cut the laminate planks to fit your room dimensions. Remember to leave a gap around the edges for expansion, typically about a quarter of an inch.

Step 5: First Row

Starting from a corner, place the first plank down. Make sure to leave the expansion gap. Fit the end tongue and groove of each plank tightly together.

Step 6: Subsequent Rows

For each new row, ensure planks are staggered so the seams do not line up across rows, providing a stronger and more visually pleasing floor.

Step 7: Expansion Gaps

Continue laying the flooring while maintaining the expansion gaps on the perimeter. Use spacers to help maintain this gap consistently.

Step 8: Last Row

Measure and cut the planks to fit in the last row, considering the expansion gap. Use a pull bar or similar tool to fit the last row as it might be tight.

Step 9: Finishing Touches

Install baseboards, quarter-round moulding, or other types of threshold and transition strips to cover the expansion gaps. Securely fasten these finishing touches into the wall, not the floor.
