Hardwood Floor Maintenance
This playbook provides detailed steps for properly cleaning and maintaining hardwood floors to ensure their longevity and preserve their natural shine, while also preventing damage.
Step 1: Preparation
Remove all furniture and rugs from the area to expose the entire hardwood floor surface for cleaning.
Step 2: Sweeping
Thoroughly sweep the floor using a soft-bristle broom or a dust mop to remove all dust, dirt, and debris.
Step 3: Vacuuming
Use a vacuum with a hardwood floor attachment to clean between the boards and in hard-to-reach areas without scratching the floor.
Step 4: Mopping
Mop the floor with a damp (not wet) mop using a hardwood floor cleaner. Ensure the mop is well wrung to avoid excess liquid, which can damage the wood.
Step 5: Drying
Immediately after mopping, use a clean, dry, microfiber cloth or mop to dry the floor completely, preventing water from sitting and being absorbed by the wood.
Step 6: Polishing
Apply hardwood floor polish to add a protective layer and enhance the floor’s shine. Use a flat mop with a microfiber pad to spread the polish evenly.
Step 7: Buffing
Buff the floor gently with a microfiber cloth or a buffing machine to bring out the shine and ensure the polish is well absorbed and distributed.
General Notes
Cleaner Selection
Always use a neutral pH cleaner designed for hardwood floors to avoid damaging the wood.
Water Exposure
Avoid excessive water on hardwood floors as it can warp and permanently damage the wood.
Regular Cleaning
Regular cleaning, at least once a week, is recommended to maintain the appearance and integrity of the hardwood flooring.
