Setting SMART Career Goals

This playbook outlines the process of setting career goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It is designed to help individuals strategize their career progression effectively.

Step 1: Specificity

Determine what you want to accomplish in your career by asking the 'W' questions—Who is involved? What do I want to accomplish? Where will it be done? Why is this goal important?

Step 2: Measurability

Make sure the goal can be measured. Identify how you will measure progress and success. Ask yourself: How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

Step 3: Achievability

Evaluate whether the goal is attainable with the skills and resources you have, or what you will need to obtain in order to achieve it. Set goals that are realistic and possible for you to achieve.

Step 4: Relevance

Align your goal with your broader career objectives. It should be a stepping stone that will lead to long-term goals. Ask yourself if the goal seems worthwhile and matches other efforts or needs in your career.

Step 5: Time-bound

Set a deadline for the goal to create a sense of urgency. This helps prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your longer-term goals.
