Step 1: Preparation

Turn off the water supply to the shower. This is usually done by turning off the main water valve or the specific valves for bathroom plumbing.

Step 2: Disassemble

Remove the handle and trim from the diverter valve. This may require a screwdriver to remove screws and possibly a handle puller if the handle does not come off easily.

Step 3: Inspect

Check the diverter mechanism for visible damage or mineral deposits. Clean any debris and buildup that could be causing the malfunction or replace damaged parts as necessary.

Step 4: Replace Washer

If the washer is worn or damaged, remove the old washer and replace it with a new one. Ensure the replacement washer is the correct size and fit.

Step 5: Reassemble

Once the diverter is cleaned or repaired, reassemble the parts in reverse order of disassembly. Make sure every part is secured properly.

Step 6: Test

Turn the water supply back on and test the function of the diverter by switching the flow between the tub faucet and the showerhead. Check for leaks around the reassembled parts.
